The Plateau and Mile End are the other centre. Lower rise, mostly residential, heavily walkable, and where a good share of independents host. Griffintown and the Old Port have filled up with newer condo buildings over the last decade and now carry a noticeable share of the central incall listings.

Off the island, Laval to the north and the South Shore — Brossard, Longueuil — are separate markets with their own regulars. The bridges are the constraint: crossing at the wrong hour is its own kind of decision, and it is why travel fees here are usually quoted by bridge rather than by kilometre.

Language, and what a listing is telling you

Roughly half the listings on this page are written in French, some in both languages, and a few in English only. That is a genuine signal rather than an accident — a provider writing in French first is generally telling you which language she would rather conduct the arrangement in.

The board's Montréal sections run bilingually and neither language is moderated more strictly than the other. Reviews are posted in whichever the writer prefers, and nobody is asked to switch.

Screening, and why you will be asked

Screening practice in Montréal tends to be a little lighter than in Toronto and considerably lighter than in Vancouver, but it exists, and the reasoning behind it does not change with the city. A provider meeting a stranger alone needs some way of knowing who is at the door, and references from other providers are the usual currency.

The right answer is to provide what is asked or to look elsewhere. Negotiating screening down is the single most reliable way to end an arrangement before it starts, and it is what most of the bad experiences posted on the board have in common.

Reading the board

Weigh a review by three things: how recently it was written, how much history the account behind it has, and how specific it is. A four-year-old review describes a situation that has probably moved on. A brand new account with a single glowing post is not necessarily false but is worth less than a member with years behind them. And a review that describes how the communication actually went is worth ten that say it was great.

Montréal is quieter on the board than Toronto is. That is a fair reflection of where the posting members are rather than of the market.
